AbstractSmart Grid—A GIS OpportunityTrack: Electric Utilities Author Utility Companies are faced with the increase of power from alternative sources such as wind and solar energy supplied into their networks. Current customers will not only consume energy, but are also offering power back to the "energy market". Therefore, the energy industry must focus itself in redesigning the grid from the current structure into a Smart Grid. Enterprise GIS will be the critical success factor for this process in the future. In the presentation, a vision of the future and the challenges of the Power Industry, as well as the opportunities available in a GIS are shown.
