Abstract

3D GIS Analysis for Redevelopment Land Use Planning
Track: Urban and Regional Planning

In 2007, the City of Mesa, Arizona was awarded an extension of the Metro Phoenix light rail system through Downtown Mesa. In order to preserve the historic character of the downtown area and promote redevelopment associated with the Light Rail system, care has to be taken on where the redevelopment occurs. To get a better understanding of current conditions, a 3D model of Downtown Mesa was created. This model, combined with projections of residential density and commercial property locations was extruded to display future building heights. The "virtual city" will give public citizens & local government decision makers a vision of how existing buildings and any future development will interact with each other.
This presentation will discuss the steps for creating the 3D model of existing buildings, the methodology behind calculation and display of future building heights, and the reaction toward the results.
