Abstract

GIS Experiences with the Gulf Oil Spill
Track: Disaster Management and Emergency Response
Authors: Jason Duke, Kurt Snider

Leading the GIS group within the Wildlife Branch for the Gulf Oil Spill proved to be a challenge in itself. Data compolation, lack of data, technology and communication issues compounded problems that had to be addressed by the group. The need for accurate and fast maps resulted in the development of operating procedures and a lot of lessons were learned from our deployment. Come hear how we used ArcGIS Mobile on Trimble Nomad units to collect data and post as close to real-time as possible while we produced over 500 map products to chronicle the threats to wildlife by oil.
