Abstract

Standardizing Military Training Area GIS Data Collection with ESRI ArcPad
Track: Defense and Intelligence
Authors: Steven Bowley

The US Army Sustainable Range Program (SRP) is responsible for developing and maintaining geo-spatial data for US and host nation owned military training areas. This data supports the Integrated Training Area Management (ITAM) program, providing the basis for environmental assessments, and supports the Range and Training Land Program (RTLP) by providing the basis for analysis in range modernization projects. SRP data standards include accuracy requirements of less than 1 meter for features such as military training firing positions and targets. In order to achieve this accuracy SRP GIS analysts use handheld GPS units running ESRI ArcPad software. Customized data collection interfaces were created using ArcPad Studio in order to increase the usability of the software for non-GIS professionals. Each interface is designed for specific data collection tasks and enforces standards required for SRP data. This presentation discusses the customization process, and presents results from end user experiences.
