Abstract

Our Move to a Rich Internet GIS Application
Track: System Implementation for GIS
Authors: Jonathan Houck, Patrick Brooke

In September 2009, the City of Modesto began the planning and implementation of "GIS Modesto", a Rich Internet Application (RIA) based on Microsoft's Silverlight and ESRI's ArcGIS Server technologies. This unique application allows city staff and the general public the opportunity to have unprecedented access to GIS data in a pleasing to the eye setting. With the click of the mouse, users can get building permit information, property characteristics, links to Google Street View and Bing Bird's Eye View, utility plat maps, and much more. The purpose of this presentation is to demonstrate how city staff planned, designed, and implemented the application with a discussion of the steps involved to complete such an ambitious task using only "in house" resources. Planned is a discussion of the programming environment, modulation and simplification of the code, user interface design processes, and steps taken to roll out the application to users.
