The Division of Public Health Informatics at South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (SC DHEC) is actively utilizing a geocoding service for all its public health and environmental data sets. Currently, DHEC is utilizing a composite geocoding web service with various reference data sets including address points from counties and municipalities, E911 centerlines, StreetMap USA 2008 and ZIP codes. Address points have been provided to DHEC through the State GIS Coordinator who has actively been reaching out to local governments in efforts to build collaboration between state and local agencies. Standardizing address point files from multiple counties involves various processing steps which led to automation through models to conform to an address locator.
This presentation addresses the challenges and rewards of collecting, processing and utilizing address points data.
