Abstract

Challenges and Opportunities Developing GIS 2.0 at a Wastewater Utility
Track: Water, Wastewater, and Stormwater
Authors: Peter Wilt, Rene Rubalcava

The Sanitation Districts of Los Angeles County are a regional wastewater and solid waste management agency, serving 5.7 million people in southern California. The Sanitation Districts own and operate 1,400 miles of main trunk sewer and 11 wastewater treatment plants. Engineers, technical staff and field crews need access to accurate and current sewer system maps and data for their daily work tasks. A legacy GIS system based on CAD, mainframe data, and ArcView 3.3 has filled this role for nearly ten years. The Sanitation Districts have embarked on developing a modern RIA solution using ArcGIS Server, Adobe Flex and an enterprise geodatabase.

This discussion will provide the audience lessons learned undergoing this type of GIS project, including specific development decisions, workflow criteria and data modeling issues.
