Abstract

Bicycle Routing Using Network Analyst

Bicycle routing models are capable of more than creating optimal routes for cyclists. In addition to serving as navigational tools, such models can tell a story about a jurisdiction's bikeability and how it may be improved. This paper outlines a pragmatic approach to planning bicycle facilities by: (1) providing a manual for constructing bicycle routing models using various geoprocessers and Network Analyst; (2) demonstrating how such models can strategically locate where proposed bicycle facilities should be placed; and (3) illustrating how GIS overlays can streamline the process for bicycle facility implementation, which dovetails with maintaining the routing model. The goal of this paper is to provide a tool that expedites the planning and execution of highly functional bicycle networks, thereby helping to increase bicycle mode share.
