There have been multiple applications in the past for GIS in the area of urban design. However, an increase trend of improving design capabilities within the GIS environment has allowed urban designers and planners to streamline processes by conducting multiple representations and analysis all in GIS. Using ArcGIS and the concept of geodesign, we developed a complex urban design analysis for strategic planning in the city of Boroondara. These exercise, called the Activity Centre Strategy (ACS), incorporated economic, land use and built form analyses into cartographic maps produced entirely using ArcMap. The ACS appears to be a positive example in where urban design professionals, more inclined to use CAD and Adobe products, can produce more sophisticated and accessible map results using exisiting tools in GIS products. In the future, opportunities appear to emerge to use GIS not only as part of the strategic justification process.
