Abstract

Mapping Coal Slurry Waste Through Time in West Virginia
Track: Mining and Geosciences
Authors: Andrew Schaer

Coal slurry and refuse are quite arguably the most abundant solid waste product produced by modern civilization. Trying to map the location of this waste through the forty year has proved very complex.
In the last two years the WVDEP has developed an ArcGIS tracking system of slurry that tracks all surface placement of coal slurry back to 1972. This time stamped series of polygons track all surface slurry placement from modern time back through 1972 using both remote sensing and analog sources. In addition all know underground injection of coal slurry is being tracked over the same time period. This tracking includes all known injection sites points and the mine voids receiving the coal slurry.
The creation of these related GIS databases will allow tracking through a web based GIS interface of all coal slurry materials
