Abstract

Using Network Analyst to Plan and Map Roadway Sanding Routes

NTTA is responsible for sanding all toll roads, ramps and service roads within the maintenance area during a snow or ice event. In the past, a yearly project involved creating roadway maps that provided guidance to drivers and sanding crews. However, these maps did not provide accurate information regarding drive times and distances. By incorporating Network Analyst into the project, not only could sanding areas be designated, but round trip drive times and actual sanding miles could be analyzed.
Utilizing Network Analyst, a network representation of all the areas of sanding responsibility and truck routing was developed. Each segment of sanded roadway was assigned a delivery point and intersection delay times were incorporated. By taking this approach, drive times can now be analyzed and roadway assignments can be modified to increase sanding distance, decrease drive time, and improve overall efficiency. Network Analyst has made this yearly mapping project more beneficial.
