Abstract

Building a Multimodal Network for the Railroad
Track: Transportation
Authors: Tony Foisy

CSX Corporation, based in Jacksonville, Fla., is one of the leading transportation companies, providing rail, intermodal and rail-to-truck transload services. The company's transportation network spans 21,000 miles with service to 23 eastern states and the District of Columbia, and connects to more than 70 ocean, river, and lake ports. Recognizing the growing need to obtain accurate rail-to-road-to-rail distance/time calculations, CSX developed a multimodal network to calculate the shortest path between origin and destination locations. This multimodal network provides transportation companies with a better understanding of travel times, cost and distances. This robust network dataset provides a data management structure that helps to create, edit and maintain for future transportation upgrade applications. This presentation will focus on the data acquisition, pre-processing, and process involved in building a multimodal network. This presentation is recommended for transportation companies for their logistics, delivery and routing analysis, or for anyone interested in multimodal transportation.
