Abstract

Safe Routes to Schools: Analyzing Walksheds and Sidewalk Infrastructure
Track: Education
Authors: Chris Brown

It is estimated that 20 - 30 percent of morning commute traffic is generated by trips of parents driving their children to school. Walk Boston in cooperation with MAPC undertook a two phase Safe Routes to School (SRTS) Program to reduce traffic - and thus greenhouse gas emission - related to elementary and middle school trips. Phase 1 of this project comprised research to identify the best candidate municipalities and/or schools in greater Boston to carry out a targeted SRTS program. Network analyst, state road and sidewalk data, was used, in conjunction with Census block group data. This talk will describe the process, from a technical GIS perspective.
