Abstract

The Library of Congress Congressional Geospatial Data System
Track: System Implementation for GIS
Authors: Nicholas Jackson

The Geography & Map division, in the Library of Congress, holds the largest collection of maps in the world, and a growing area of their collection is geospatial data. The G&M division also serves as a central location where the general public and Congress comes to when they have a question are geographically linked, and large number of these questions are becoming more easily answered with the geospatial data that is held with their collection. To help the G&M division to better answer these GIS questions the LC decided to develop and implement the Congressional Geospatial Data System (CGDS). The CGDS is an ArcGIS Server based application that allows the user to search geospatial metadata and view this data within an internal webmap application. In this presentation I will share with the audience on how we implemented this GIS web application and lessons that we learned from the development process.
