CitizenGIS - A Configurable Silverlight Solution

Chesterfield County, Virginia deployed a new Silverlight web mapping application called CitizenGIS in April of 2010. CitizenGIS was developed using ESRI ArcGIS Server, Microsoft Silverlight 3 and the ESRI Silverlight API and supports average citizens seeking GIS information.
After the initial development, the team began enhancing the project to support multiple business functionalities from one Silverlight solution using .xml configuration files. One code base was created from which all Silverlight mapping applications would stem. This enhanced solution was deployed in October 2010 along with 2 additional web pages to support the newly mapped FEMA floodplains and the new county Comprehensive Plan. Other pages are on the horizon such as a Tourism page and intranet county department-specific pages.
This configurable Silverlight solution has given Chesterfield the flexibility and scalability to create additional web pages using multiple map services in minutes depending on the needs of various customers.
