Abstract

Portal to the Past: Cemetery Management GIS
Track: State and Local Government
Authors: Matthew Morgan

With over 134,000 cemetery positions set across 100 acres of land, locating gravesites can be difficult. We responded by implementing a GIS and delivered a web based system that is accessible to cemetery staff and the general public.
GIS provided us with the ability to link spatial data with the non spatial data in our Cemetery Management System so that we could produce detailed location maps for each cemetery position.
We have also used the GIS to visualize the changing demographics of our customer base over the last 70 years to assist with forecasting future trends.
The GIS is also being extended into grounds management with area and measurement analysis being used to calculate approximate maintenance requirements for garden areas and asset information being introduced in the coming months.
This project shows how GIS can be integrated across a small organisation to achieve multiple and varying outcomes.
