Abstract

Planning the future of Singapore in 3D
Track: Urban and Regional Planning

URA is Singapore's national land use planning authority. Bringing our planning function to another level; URA implemented a country wide 3D digital urban model system (3DUMS) providing tools for staff to perform 3D/GIS analysis e.g. line-of-sight studies.

The models were used in microclimatic analyses, including wind-flow and shadow studies to optimize comfort of public spaces through building forms, solar exposure computation to determine capacity of land parcel conforming to policy on sky-rise greenery. Urban design studies for developments have also been carried out to optimize development potential while safeguarding precious views of lush greenery.

One unique feature is the 3D Parametric modeling module. This integrates quantitative urban planning with qualitative
aspects of urban design helping to strike a balance between needs of macro urban planning and micro urban design.

This presentation covers:
. Overview of 3DUMS
. Leveraging on 3D to facilitate urban planning and design
