A good blast design shall be aimed at efficient fragmentation of the rock while limiting the adverse effects within the safety criteria. This paper describes the development of a GIS-based approach to facilitate the blasting analysis process in the urban area, where the sensitive receivers to consider are of high complexity and the requirements to fulfil are strict since the concern of high consequence of human life implied.
This tool has been successfully applied in several tunnel construction projects in Hong Kong and proved to provide a systematic and efficient method that helps to streamline the workflow between the analysis calculations and the various data sources. A further application was made to visualise the blasting sequence with displaying the schedule timeline in GIS. This has been used as a high impact presentation tool to communicate among the various stakeholders involved in a large-scale construction project.
