Abstract

STRUCTURES LAYERS DATA STEWARDSHIP PROGRAM IN CENTRAL FLORIDA
Track: Spatial Data Infrastructure
Authors: Albert Hill, Stanimira Bourova

A cooperative relationship between Federal, state, and local geospatial data producing agencies is essential for the efficient development of the National Spatial Data Infrastructure (NSDI). In July 2008 USGS, LYNX (Central Florida's Regional Transportation Authority) and Orange, Osceola, Seminole, and Volusia counties engaged in a cooperative agreement to provide a regional model for a critical structures theme stewardship program. The success of this initial program led to expanding the program to 16 counties in Central Florida covering the Daytona-Orlando-Tampa SMSA corridor. In 2010 USGS funded the coordination effort, led by the Central Florida GIS Workshop. All partnering counties modified existing practices, and created standardized attribute fields in accordance with the USGS Best Practices Data Model and codified responsibilities for yearly data updates. This presentation discusses the operational approach, results, and implications for expanded employment of this initiative at the state level.
