Implementing 3rd Party software into a structured GIS workflow can be a challenging task. New technologies promise to make processes faster and more efficient. However, it is the responsibility of the Analyst to ultimately make it work and produce a usable product. The Capturx for ArcGIS extension © uses digital pens and takes paper-based map markups and translates them into digital format (i.e. shapefiles).
E&E used geodatabase topology to address coincident geometry resulting from a Capturx session. The initial task was to digitize ecological communities in a map series. After the map markup session the data was downloaded into a geodatabase and then post-processed using topology and well defined spatial relationship rules. During this process manual errors and the limitations of the software were identified and corrected. The key of this exercise was to optimize the time spent visually reviewing the data and realize the goals of the technology.
