Abstract

Disseminating Global Population Data with a Geodatabase and Web GIS
Track: Census and Statistical
Authors: John Fitzwater

The Population Division of the U.S. Census Bureau maintains and updates an archive of global subnational age/sex data and associated administrative boundary maps as a part of its Populations at Risk effort. In addition, a new methodology developed by the Population Division provides gridded population estimates derived from a fusion of satellite imagery and census data. This presentation will show how a web GIS and geodatabase can enhance the structure and accessibility of these data. A geodatabase in particular provides several distinct advantages for organizing these data, including feature validation and error checking, relationship classes for linking tabular and spatial data, and forced data standardization. Furthermore, two successful web products launched by the Census Bureau and its partners containing gridded population estimates of Haiti and Pakistan will illustrate the value of distributing data with a web GIS.
