Abstract

Subnational Population Estimates for Responding to Global HIV/AIDS
Track: Census and Statistical
Authors: Robert Leddy

The U.S. President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) has been sponsoring the U.S. Census Bureau to link subnational 5-year age/sex group population estimates for 2000-2015 to shapefiles for countries in Africa, Asia, and elsewhere that share bilateral efforts with the U.S. Government. The shapefiles enable users both spatially and temporally to relate populations by sex and age structure at subnational levels to the prevalence patterns of the disease within these populations. The files therefore serve as a valuable tool for planning treatment and prevention programs in such areas, and for monitoring the progress of programs already in place. This presentation will focus on the shapefiles, which for currency, completeness, and congruity with most recent census numbers can be less than ideal. The acquisition, accuracy, maintenance, and upgrading of the shapefiles will be discussed, as will fitting population data to them for linkage.
