Abstract

The NSDI Cadastral Standard: Impacts and Opportunities for GIS
Track: Spatial Data Infrastructure
Authors: Jeffery Nighbert

Implementation of the NSDI Cadastral Standard and establishment of datasets that meet this standard is close at hand, especially for the western United States where the Bureau of Land Management has collected extensive survey and land parcel information for the lands it administers. Having a single database that meets national standards will prove invaluable over time, for both governmental and private uses. Having the Cadastral layer complete is critical to fulfilling the vision of a National Spatial Data Infrastructure that would contain well documented, high quality authoritative data sets for all to use.

This presentation will provide a high level picture of the NSDI Cad Standard and data, and illustrate the various impacts and problems incorporating NSDI CAD into existing GIS database will bring. There will also be a discussion of potential short and long term discussions for mitigating these problems, including new tools available in ArcGIS .
