Abstract

Severe Weather Patterns in the US from NWS Warning Polygons
Track: Atmosphere, Climate, and Weather

This presentation will show the patterns produced by a GIS analysis of National Weather Service Severe Weather Polygons. Severe weather warning polygons for the period of 2000 to 2009 were converted to grids and a simple additive model used in the GIS to identify patterns in severe weather across the Conterminous US. This analysis relies on spatially explicit warnings and requires the GIS to identify these spatial patterns. Our findings are extremely useful in understanding the spatial patterns of severe weather in the US. Additional research on "spatially aware" weather warnings will also be briefly discussed.
