Abstract

Case Study - Using ArcGIS to Baseline the Network Infrastructure
Track: Federal Applications and Enterprise Management
Authors: Wayne Russell

This case study describes the methodology used to baseline the network infrastructure in a large, government, multi-tenant organization of over 300 buildings and structures. There are also multiple research and test labs connecting various networks. The purpose of this effort is to identify the locations of all networks, conduits, fiber, switches, routers, etc. and to ensure that these resources are updated on a regular basis. The information to drive the ArcGIS repository comes from multiple databases, AutoCAD drawings, Visio drawings, individuals ready to retire, etc. In addition, knowing the network infrastructure makes the organization more agile to meet the requirements of various sponsors, enables better business decisions to be made on where to apply funds to the infrastructure and enables designers to determine where potential bottlenecks may exist on the network. This paper discusses the processes and methods used to build this system.
