Abstract

Custom Map Books in Arc10: Applications of Python Scripting
Track: Cartography and Map Production
Authors: Jennifer Sylvester

The presentation outlines two ways to create custom map books in Arc10. It also introduces the ArcPy mapping module and provides a set by step explanation of the data driven pages toolset, map template setup and adding and running scripts. The presentation provides a detailed explanation of creating map books using the new python tools and the ArcPy mapping module. It emphasizes using dynamic text elements and python coding to enable users to have full control over their maps and supplemental information. Examples of the finished map book product provided. Through the design of this presentation I was able to completely rewrite out dated and lengthy Visual Basic code into concise and highly productive python scripts. This presentation is useful for anyone who creates map books or wants to start in Arc 10 but is unsure of how to use python effectively toward this endeavor.
