Abstract

Building a Worldwide Data Library using Geodatabase Replication
Track: System Implementation for GIS
Authors: Michael Mannion, Katie Irwin, Darrell Robertson

The Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) GIS program comprises twelve regional GeoReadiness Centers (GRC), each responsible for shore-side GIS operations within a designated geographic area of responsibility. This presentation discusses how NAVFAC uses geodatabase replication to build and maintain an enterprise GeoReadiness data library comprising aggregated data from the local GRC geodatabases. While geodatabase replication is well suited to supporting this type of environment, factors such as the presence of multiple parent geodatabases, regional variations on the core data model, and the large volume of replicas and replicated data sets pose specific challenges. Topics will include a discussion of the business case for replication, architecture overview, solutions to technical challenges, and recommendations based on lessons learned. This content is appropriate for an audience of enterprise GIS administrators, managers, and system architects, as well as developers and end users with an interest in geodatabase replication.
