Abstract

FEMA's New Risk MAP GIS Datasets, a Case Study
Track: Disaster Management and Emergency Response
Authors: Jonathan Sorg, Brad Ziss

To demonstrate FEMA's Risk Mapping program, a case study was performed to parallel the developed database schema. Attendees will get a close look at some real-world FEMA Risk MAP GIS datasets. This presentation will explore how the GIS data is produced along with the intended uses. The presentation will detail the flood risk project lifecycle, from the Watershed based Discovery map, to GIS data development, and to the final Risk MAP. It will also showcase how GIS is being used as a tool to tie the Risk MAP program to communities, by increasing public awareness and leading to action that reduces risk to life and property.
