Abstract

Federal Geoportal in the Cloud: A Pilot Partnership Project
Track: Spatial Data Infrastructure
Authors: Kim Jenkins, Gabe Sataloff

The National Ocean Service (NOS) provides public access to vast amounts of geospatial data, tools and applications. Since 2004, the NOS Data Explorer has served as the primary point for data discovery and delivery for NOS's geospatial data and metadata. The NOS Data Explorer has become increasingly complicated to maintain and is being revitalized to meet the demands of the modern Web. This pilot project will migrate the NOS Data Explorer application to a cloud-based architecture that leverages the ESRI Geoportal Extension and Amazon cloud resources. The presentation will highlight the reduction of work for IT infrastructure and the utilization of Open Geospatial standard methods for exposing data, metadata, and services to the public. The project will also identify successes and lessons learned while interacting in a cloud environment to recommend an approach for serving federal geospatial data to the public in a more integrated and efficient manner.
