Abstract

Using Facilitated-Volunteered Geographic Information to Better Understand the Built Environment
Track: GeoDesign
Authors: Christopher Seeger

This presentation illustrates how facilitated-VGI techniques and GIS Server processing have been used to collect and analyze information about the built environment from the perspective of individual users. Discussion will include the development of the Server API and geoprocessing tasks used in the processing and analysis of the information. Examples of the types of results from various studies (i.e. safe routes to schools, community transportation and recreation inventory) will also be presented. These include the user identified recreation routes, location of barriers to physical activity and proximity analyses. Attendees of this presentation will learn how facilitated VGI techniques can be valuable resources for both health and design professionals as they work to improve physical activity and reduce obesity levels.
