Abstract

Is your GIS ready to support a DMS?
Track: Electric Utilities
Authors: Tom Helmer

The presentation will provide a definition and system reference architecture for what a distribution management system (DMS) is: covering the interrelationships a DMS in the larger set of Smart Grid technologies: AMI, MDM, DRMS, HAN, DMS, DA, SA, OMS and SCADA technologies. The large suite of DMS advanced applications that are available in the market place today will be discussed at their functional and relative business value levels: On-Line Powerflow, Optimized Switching, FDIR, Fault Location Prediction, Intelligent Alarming, Micro Grid Management and Load Management. How one's investment in GIS can be leveraged and what enhancements are required in one's GIS to support the next generation of DMS advanced applications. The presentation will also cover the need for the GIS and mGIS to support the 'zero' data latency requirements of a DMS implementation and impacts that DMS will have to the utility's Data Change Control processes.
