The Southwestern Regional Office of the US Forest Service has been providing engineering and surveying geospatial mapping products for the region for over 2 decades. The Regional office took on an effort to inventory and organize these robust geospatial datasets by developing a geodatabase design that supports engineering data derived from engineering related mapping projects. The Large Scale GDB provides a comprehensive inventory of "as is" feature data, surface data, and orthophotography of the Region's assets. Additionally, the Region contracted with ESRI to help develop the geodatabase requirements and translate those into conceptual, logical, and physical geodatabase designs. An important part of this activity was the consideration of the implementation and working structure of the geodatabase, including workflow processes for managing data requests, data storage, and population of the index layers.
