Abstract

Using Replicated Geodatabases to build a National Conservation Easement Database
Track: Environmental Management

Conservation Biology Institute has partnered with Ducks Unlimited, Defenders of Wildlife, NatureServe and the Trust for Public Land to build a National Conservation Easement Database, the first nation-wide inventory of conservation easements. These organizations began designing a spatial database in 2009 to collect spatial data along with pertinent attributes for conservation planning. CBI's role was to implement this database to allow for ease of use for all partners, as well as maintain a standard schema. As an added efficiency, the group decided to use replicated geodatabase technology to facilitate the population of this shared database. In lieu of a server, we opted to use the Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2), with SQL Express, installing ArcGIS Server and SDE. By using ArcGIS Server, this partnership has been able to efficiently and effectively collaborate with one another to create a first of its kind conservation dataset.
