Abstract

Helping Engineers spend CIP $$ using GIS
Track: Water, Wastewater, and Stormwater
Authors: Andy Gravin, Jim Damschen

Engineers at San Antonio Water System frequently found themselves designing new pipes and spending CIP dollars on pipes that were already in the ground. Differnt engineering departments were designing on top of each other. The GIS and IS department decided to help them by building an application extended from the ESRI water CIP template. The application built in Silverlight and hosted on ArcServer allows engineers to begin the design process on the current GIS infrastructure, analyze the existing pipe, apply cost to the type and size of pipe and then track the design from cradle to grave all on an ArcServer service. The application touches all parts of the CIP process from design to final asbuilts and is used across the agency---from engineering to finance and of course, the GIS department is in the loop from beginning to end.
