The US Geoscience Information Network is promoting the use of standardized catalog service and community specifications for data interchange protocols and formats to facilitate discovery and access to information managed by state geological surveys and the USGS in the United States. OGC Catalog Service for the Web (CSW) using a geoscience-focused ISO metadata profile has been implemented using the ESRI Geoportal and FOSS Geonetwork for data discovery and evaluation. Enabling direct client access to services from within an application environment (e.g. ArcMap using the CSW Extension) is an important use case. OGC WMS, WFS, and SOS services have been deployed for data delivery, and development of specifications for content is ongoing. Funding from the Department of Energy will enable use of this approach for service-based publication of geospatial data from the geological surveys for geothermal energy development through the National Geothermal Data System.
