Current research within University College Dublin's Urban Modeling Group focuses on integration of 3D modeling systems with LiDAR, BIM and other information rich urban resources to better manage modern urban design and sustainability focusing on the preservation of built environment heritage. The ability to ingest, model and analysis true 3D features, aerial and terrestrial point clouds to historic, existing and future information rich built environment data. Permits a level of design and scenario modeling that is unprecedented. The focus of the ongoing research using GIS was modeling subsurface and structural elements and the effects infrastructure projects have on the built environment and how best to mitigate their. In this case the effects of the planned Dublin Metro on the extensive Georgian buildings and monuments along its city center route. This project shows how integration of disparate inform can help with better managing preservation and restoration of important architectural heritage.
