Los Angeles County has begun the task of consolidating two GIS landbases separately maintained by two county departments into a single landbase that can be jointly maintained by both departments. The purpose of combining these large datasets, each containing over 2.4 million parcels comprising over 4700 square miles, is to promote data sharing and reduce redundant effort. The work is being facilitated through the extensive use of ESEA's MapMerger ArcMap extension. MapMerger is used to transfer attributes, add features and spatially align complex topologies through an automated process called map conflation. The final dataset should enable broad sharing of GIS data among Los Angeles County government organizations at all levels and result in increased data re-use and realized cost savings.
