Viewshed analysis is useful in measuring the visibility of an area from a given viewpoint. It is already considered a usual function in geographic information systems and can be seen in many applications especially in planning and in physical modelling.
In this study, viewshed analysis in ArcGIS was used to assess the security plans of the University of the Philippines Diliman campus by comparing the viewshed produced from security personnel's location to the crime statistics of the area. The viewshed map overlayed with buffered distance from the location of the security personnel was investigated to estimate the obstruction and degradation of visible points from the sight of the security personnels. Strong correlations have been found between the obstructed, degraded views and the occurrence of crimes in the area.
