Abstract

Developing a GeoAtlas for emergency responders in Carbon County Montana
Track: Emergency Medical Services/Fire

Emergency responders in Carbon County Montana are facing many challenges related to the new rural addressing system as required by E911 standards. Many roads were given new names and numerous addresses were changed as part of this new system. As a result, the County needed to 1) distribute road and address information to responders to assist in navigation, and 2) identify and correct compliance problems with posted addresses and road signs.

In response to these needs, the County's Disaster and Emergency Services (DES) office developed a digital GeoAtlas. The GeoAtlas consists of over 400 detailed road/address maps delivered on flash drive with updates available on a local Website. The maps are organized into a logical system of print-ready maps each having optional topographic, aerial or cadastral base layers. The maps in the GeoAtlas are in GeoPDF format which offer several advantages over traditional paper map books.
