Abstract

GEOFIWEST Training Program - Building a Sustainable Enterprise GIS
Track: Defense and Intelligence
Authors: Yvonne Paul, Bill Russell

The Marine Corps Western Regional Geospatial Data Center (GEOFIWEST) located at Camp Pendleton, California implemented an in-house GIS Training Program to provide quality enterprise-level instruction across its area of responsibility. By certifying an existing contract staff member as an Esri Authorized Instructor the organization is able to train personnel on the use of the Marine Corps' GIS program and applications at a substantial cost savings. With a forthcoming significant increase in the number of geospatial data layers each Marine Corps Installation will be required to validate and maintain there will be an even greater need to train the responsible subject matter experts on GIS. This need is further emphasized by the reduction of GIS professionals available to support these additional requirements due to budget cuts and stalled in-sourcing. Through customized and innovative course offerings the GEOFIWEST training program is helping to build a sustainable Marine Corps GIS program.
