GPS and GIS to Support Internet Network Design in Ghana

In the past ten years, the number of colleges and universities has moved from 6 to over 40. This is a result of the increase in the number of private colleges and universities that offer college education to student especially to those that do not get admission to the few government run universities. Internet bandwidth to support internet based learning as critically needed in the universities. Ghana Telecom University College, an offshoot of the then Ghana Telecommunication Company ( now Vodafone, Ghana) negotiated a deal with Vodafone to help provide internet bandwidth for education in Ghana. To provide last mile solutions to various institutions, a network design that utilizes all the available technologies in addition to accurate location were needed. This paper discusses the processes used in acquiring university location information, location of telecom exchange positions and the design of a good network to support this project.
