Abstract

Mobile Inland Electronic Navigational Charts, an ArcGIS application for iPhone/iPad
Track: Charting and Data Collecting
Authors: Alex Ly

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has developed Inland Electronic Navigation Charts (IENCs) on much of the 8,200 miles of rivers in the U.S. Inland River System, and to date, has been offered only for use on traditional platforms.
Due to the popularity of the current generation of smart mobile devices, especially Apple iOS (iPad, iPhone, iPod Touch) - the consumer mobile platform of choice - the IENC Program is developing this mobile application for the general public. This application enables real-time navigation, data collecting and validation, on-demand field reporting, live interaction with major social networking communities, as well as the ability to accept and
distribute user generated content such as video, images, or text. This
application provides a convenient, low cost alternative for the maritime community, helping to increase waterborne situational awareness in a timely fashion.
