Today's decisions are increasingly relying on understanding of complex relations, deep context, and dynamics of phenomena in time and space. Therefore, the knowledge and its management is utmost level critical for any organization. The solutions for knowledge management are static in general such as document repositories. These solutions in general do not allow user interaction or support for tacit knowledge that is an outcome of an on demand cooperation with an appropriate expert. The geographic information system (GIS) technology can incorporate these features through its integrative feature based on the location. In this paper the Geographical Information Systems (GIS) as integral part of Knowledge Management (KM) applications is discussed. The exploitation of expert knowledge by embedding state-of-the-art GIS functionality is illustrated with a case study on how GIS can be utilized to provide web based environment to monitor, assess flooding.
