Using Web GIS to Collect Information Before it Retires

This paper covers the processes and technology that can be used to capture data from a retiring workforce. It is common for utilities to have a large number of employees scheduled to retire within the next few years and when they do, they will take valuable knowledge and data with them that is not stored in an enterprise system. Using ArcSDE, ArcGIS Server and the ESRI Silverlight API we quickly created a solution that allowed staff to efficiently transfer information into a GIS database and access it in many different formats including web maps, paper maps and reports. As this project moved forward we created an application using the ArcGIS Mobile SDK that allowed field crews to maintain the data. This presentation will go through the steps that the GIS Department used to get from gathering requirements to the finished product that is relied on daily for essential information.
