Abstract

Applications of the National Hydrography Dataset
Track: Water Resources
Authors: Kathy Isham

The National Hydrography Dataset (NHD) is the surface water component of The National Map. The NHD is a digital vector dataset used by geographic information systems. The NHD is used by many organizations for not only general purpose mapping, but also for the analysis of surface water information. The NHD benefits many users working in hydrology, pollution control, fisheries biology, and resource management. A variety of applications in these fields is presented to explore the use of the NHD in geographic and scientific analysis by providing examples of the data, tools, and maps that make the analysis possible.
