Each academic year, students at the University of California, Santa Barbara have an opportunity to take a three-course series in geographic information systems (GIS). The third and advanced course in the series is structured around a group-based project, highlighting integration of the project with ArcGIS Server as a Web-published map service. In prior years, the Department of Geography's IT Manager has dedicated time to help individual students and faculty with the Department's production GIS servers for this requirement. This year, the Department took on the task of creating a computing environment to support direct student involvement with ArcGIS Server in a classroom setting. This presentation outlines the case-study of a configuration process of ArcGIS Server 10 in a complex workstation environment that includes local and domain accounts, campus-wide and local firewalls, ArcGIS Desktop 10 interaction, and production servers operating in a Windows environment.
