The Army has more than 10 million acres of land to train Soldiers, but some ranges and training lands are not available due to restrictions that can inhibit training activities and potentially impact readiness. These impacts are referred to as encroachment. The U.S. Army Environmental Command (USAEC), in coordination with Headquarters, Department of the Army, developed a methodology for identifying and measuring encroachment. The GIS-based methodology is objective, repeatable, and reliable and produces graphic and tabular outputs. In 2010, USAEC completed encroachment data collection and analysis at 46 installations. USAEC plans to analyze encroachment at an additional 71 installations and training sites in 2011. This session will feature an overview of the methodology, a review of example outputs, and a trend analysis of data collected to date.
