Abstract

Mapping and Caching Romania
Track: Community Maps Program
Authors: Andreea Gutu, Bogdan Cheveresan

The Romanian Community basemap project was split into three phases. The first phase, and also the most challenging one, was to create the spatial database from existing authoritative data sources: official maps and aerial images. Using official maps at a scale of 1:100 000, published by the Military Topographic Directorate, we were able to extract all the necessary information that cover the 1:18,000 to 1:72,000 scale templates. Aerial images at 1:5,000 scale were used for all of Romania in order to obtain more detailed information for the large scale templates. The second phase involved data migration from our local database into the Esri templates that cover all of Romania. Because there are significant differences in data classification, the data integration was done using ArcCatalog tools, in order to have better control. The third phase consisted of authoring the map document and enjoying a great cache.
