Local government interactive maps often use dynamic ad-hoc gathers of available feature classes for base mapping. We learned how Esri's Community Maps multi-scale templates greatly improve cartography for base and geologic mapping. We also learned how worldwide seamless cached map services decouple Maplex processing time/cost from basemap delivery speed. Marin County used these tools with ArcGIS Server to develop basemaps cartographically superior to, yet as fast and mashable as either Google Maps or Bing Maps.

The beautiful cartography of the multi-scale template basemaps helped us gain the necessary support to upgrade our ArcGIS Server hardware. Long-term users of our interactive map products are pleased with the new basemap and are suggesting new uses. With our new server public-facing, we offer rapid access to existing cached map services even as we are updating caches in separate execution threads using the production server.
