Abstract

City of Houston: Putting the 'Community' in Community Maps
Track: Community Maps Program
Authors: Jackie Smith

Being the 4th most populous city in the United States, the City of Houston faces many challenges managing GIS data across multiple jurisdictions, including the sheer volume of data at the city. Distribution and collaboration of GIS data and techniques requires local governance, heavy technical skills, and strong advocacy. The City of Houston envisions the Community Maps Program as an aide to bridge data authorities and build upon the community concept. This presentation will demonstrate the distinctive challenges from the City of Houston's perspective and planned solutions for putting the authoritative and contemporary basemap data in the hands of its community as well as the global community.
